Viral marketing
Viral marketing is another expression of word of mouth or recommendation marketing. Using the internet, this method of marketing becomes proportionately more achievable.
Napster achieved dramatic results by allowing users to share MP3 music files, and Hotmail, the free web-based e-mail service, places adverts for their service on every e-mail that is sent using their software. Effectively this has turned all of their subscribers into agents for them. Below you will find an example of viral marketing which we have implemented.
A live example of viral marketing. Share your knowledge, pass this page on!
When you pass this page on to your friends or colleagues, they will visit this page and a percentage of them will also pass it on...
There are two types of people to consider when using viral marketing, the infectious and the immunized.
How much longer can you contain your indifference?
The infectious visitor is usually positive and will always pass on information willingly, and the immunized is the more negative who tends not to share. The immunized will always create dead ends, but there are usually enough infectious visitors to set a viral ball rolling.
Are you infectious or immunized?
How many people do you know who might be interested in this page? Do you know anyone with a web-site interested in increasing traffic?
Send yourself a copy of the e-mail as well so you see the whole process through.
Viral by accident
After a few vote recounts, and before George W. Bush finally got his feet under the Oval Office table, a lonely e-mail wended its way across the Atlantic:
TO: The citizens of the United States of America
FROM: Subjects of the United Kingdom
SUBJECT: Notice Of Revocation
"In the light of your failure to elect anybody as President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves and, by extension, the free world, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchial duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories including New Jersey."
The e-mail, initially sent by Londoner Dan Fox to just 13 friends and colleagues in a moment of frivolity, snowballed out of all control attracting frenzied transatlantic media interest - including US TV network news and the UK's national press.
Rapid response reaction
The best reply from the Americans found its way back across the Atlantic in the form of squadrons of e-mails to 1000s of unsuspecting Brits on US mail lists:
"We welcome your concern about our electoral process. It must be exciting for you to see a real Republic in action, even if from a distance. P.S. regarding WW2: you're welcome."
