Free-for-all sites
Free-for-all sites (often known as FFA sites) are usually just a huge list of links, sometimes with little or no value to the surfer.
Many people submit their web-site to FFA pages because they believe the more pages that it appears on, the higher it will rank within search engines' results. Many search engines do indeed take this kind of information into account, but they have very sophisticated technology (software that uses ranking algorithms) that identify these types of pages and reject the information on them.

Also, it is interesting to note that Craig Silverstein of Google.com (one of the busiest global search engines) says that the more links on a page, the more diluted (or less powerful when it comes to being ranked) each individual link becomes.
I have submitted ed-u.com and its sister site, Highstreetcentral.com to 1000s of these free-for-all sites with extremely insignificant returns, i.e. one or two visitors a month.
When e-mails attack!
What I did receive, however, was hundreds of unsolicited marketing e-mails either asking me to upgrade to a paid listing or subscribe to a get-rich-quick scheme. This is because supplying a valid e-mail address is usually a requirement for submission.
If you do decide to submit to free-for-all sites, I would advise you use a separate e-mail address: Hotmail or a similar free web-based e-mail account, so that you can filter any unwanted messages.
In conclusion, it is generally thought that submission services that point to these types of sites are not worth the effort however if anyone has achieved any proven success with this method, I would be very grateful to hear from you.
