Rein your stray visitors back into your web-site with a missing page (Error 404) redirect

A lot of visitors get annoyed at the sight of a 404 error (page not found). Many of these error messages are due to the following:

  • visitors trying to guess page names

  • making spelling mistakes within the file names

  • typing .hmt or .html instead of .htm

  • leaving out forward slashes, dots etc.

Many visitors will assume it's your fault and not theirs, get annoyed and press the back button. If they are presented with an apology and information that gets them back on track, then the best is made from a bad situation.

Ask your web host if they can help you create a page that automatically redirects visitors to the homepage if they try to access a URL on your site that does not exist or is unavailable. You are likely to lose a lot of visitors if you choose not to implement this procedure.

    Feeling technical?

If you are an advanced user and feel confident, you could create one yourself.

    1. Start with a new blank HTML page and save it as "404.html".

    2. Now write an apology message. You can copy the following if you like:

We are very sorry for the inconvenience, but your requested page has moved or is not available at this time. Maybe it's our fault or maybe you have typed in the address incorrectly and would like to try again.

Please click here for "Your site's name here" Home Page or press the back button on your browser.

If your browser supports automatic redirection - just wait a few seconds and you will be taken to the Homepage. Please remember to change your bookmark if necessary.

    Redirection Code

Include the following redirection code after the HTML tag on your missing page to automatically redirect your visitors from the error page to your homepage. It is set to redirect in 7 seconds.

    3. Create a blank text file and save it as ".htaccess.txt" (you must include the dot in front of "htaccess.txt"). Add the following text to this file: ErrorDocument 404 /404.HTML

    4. Upload the '404.html' and the '.htaccess.txt' files to the root directory of your site.

    5. If you find in your statistics that there is a particular page that your visitors are having a hard time finding, you might want to add a direct link to it on this page.

For instance, an Italian media web-site mentions our sister site,'s Webcams Directory, in one of its articles. It has mistakenly included a blank space after This results in hundreds of missing page errors a month. I rein in these stray visitors with a direct link to the Webcam Page. Yes, I've repeatedly e-mailed the site to let them know, but have had no response - most probably a language problem.

Please click here for an example of a missing page redirect in action. Click the stop button when the page appears to stop automatic redirection.

Note: Many surfers omit the "www" before a web address. Try your domain name in your browser address window without typing the "www" in front of it. Does it produce a 404 error message? If it does, you are losing visitors and you should contact your web host and request that they make the changes necessary to correct this.

10s of thousands of sites are currently paying less than US $100 (UK 70) for 1,000's of guaranteed, totally targeted visitors with audited clickthroughs via a trusted third party. Click here to find out why it's not to good to be true...
